14 s are the perfect versatile drum for a jazz setup. I ve always had trouble tuning them too especially when i had a 14. It was somewhat wimpy for a floor tom but i lived with it for several years. As stated tom toms are the support drums you add to your kit.

Most importantly though if you tune it up high it still has a great full sound. Personally i find that a ringy floor tom sounds just fine if you are planning to play with other people but if you need the ring gone tape muffle rings and moon gels should fix it. It just sounded like it couldn t decide whether or not it wanted to be a tom or floor tom. I have a 5 piece set of emerald green stage customs that came with a 14 floor tom. A standard five piece drum set for example features one floor tom next to the snare and two rack toms above it.
