14 Floor Tom Vs 16

They are a dynamic duo.
14 floor tom vs 16. I have drum sets configured 12 14 20 12 16 22 13 16 20 13 16 22 11 16 18 and my walberg auge set that came from the factory with a 14x22 bass drum 9x13 mounted tom and a 16 deep x 14 across floor tom. If i had a choice between a 14 diameter drum it would be a 11x14 rack tom rather than a 14 x14 floor tom. I played a 14 inch floor tom for many many years. To me the design version floor or mounted is not important only the size and position.
Darth vater and rolltide. I don t care for 16 floor toms. Apr 12 2020 8 i play a 12 16 tom setup and really value the large tonal separation between the two. Every floor tom of mine is a true floor tom with legs.
14 inches 36 cm x14 for jazz and fusion kits and very occasionally with a 16x16 as well. As a floor tom the depths range from 11 to 14. That is 18 inches 46 cm in diameter and 16 in depth the most common size for a second floor tom used with a 16x16. I use my 12 and 14 mounted toms in floor tom position and the 16 floor next to it as third floor tom.
If i decided to go 1 up 1 down i d take the 11x14 rack tom and mount it on a snare stand and use a 16 x16 floor tom to accompany it. And 14 and 16 floor toms sound really good together but a 14 can only do so much especially if you re into playing heavier music. The 16 diameter is almost always a floor tom. 16x18 a rarer size sometimes used for a second floor tom also with a 16x16.
Same with 22 bass drums. Now i realize that sometimes you just have to have a 16 inch tom. The deeper drums have a bit more sustain but the difference is really small. Especially for outdoor use.
14 and 16 inch floor tom. I prefer a 20 but for a bigger sound i go for a 24. I think every drummer needs both. The sound is what you would expect from a 16 ft and that s what it is.
I always have a hard time getting them to sound good. I m enjoying my first hanging 16 x 14 floor tom and an 18 x 16 with it. The 14 floor tom i have no problem with but if i want a bigger sound i step over the 16 and go for the 18 floor tom. Generally a 14 tom is a very easy drum and it produces a great sound regardless of the depth.
Floor toms can be mounted. The suspension causes a little spring in the drum but not enough to create any distraction. From all of the floor toms my favorite sounding one is the 16x14. The most popular floor tom sizes are 14 x 12 13 and 14.
If you want to size down think about the intervals you want in your kit.
